This page states plainly what this site is, where its material comes from, and what it deliberately does not do. It is the page to read first if you have arrived here expecting something else.

Non-affiliation

This is an independent historical reference. It is not a church, a district, a conference or any other denominational body, and it is not affiliated with, authorised by, endorsed by or connected to one. It holds no office and represents no organisation. It does not receive, forward or answer correspondence on behalf of any church or denominational body, and it has no means by which anyone can be contacted through it.

The Northwest District of the Texas Annual Conference is an active body with its own current pages. If you are looking for it — for its staff, its congregations, its calendar or anything requiring an answer from it — go to the district's own page. Nothing on this site should be read as speaking for it, and nothing here describes its present-day arrangements.

Scope

The history of Methodist organisation in the Tyler and East Texas area includes the appointment record of the historic Tyler District from its creation in 1884 to the end of the 2006 compilation, earlier county and denominational background, and dated district notices from 2010 to 2019.

It does not cover: the present-day organisation, boundaries, leadership or activities of any district or conference; matters of doctrine, denominational governance or current denominational controversy; or the affairs of any individual congregation beyond documented historical context.

Sources

A 2006 district historical compilation, itself drawn from conference journals, contains the appointment lists, membership counts and line of presiding elders and superintendents. Public county and settlement histories provide civil background, while dated district notices cover its final decade.

For primary research, consult the collections themselves and the denominational archives.

Named individuals

Clergy of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are named here in exactly the form the historical record names them — surname, initials, charge, years — and in no other form. No biography, character, belief, opinion or achievement has been attributed to any of them beyond what the appointment record itself states. No attempt has been made to trace anyone into private life or to identify living descendants.

Nobody associated with the district in its recent decades is named at all. No staff member, officer, volunteer or participant from the 2010s appears on this site, no photograph of any identifiable person is published, and no participant in any youth activity is named or depicted. Where a source contained personal contact details, those have been removed and are not recorded anywhere on this site.

What this site does not have

There is no membership, subscription or mailing list. There is no giving, donation or fundraising mechanism of any kind, and no appeal on this site is current — the funding arrangements described on the historical pages are recorded as history. There is no prayer request facility, counselling or pastoral referral, job board, church locator, research service or lookup service; this site holds no original documents and cannot supply copies of any record.

These limits prevent confusion with the active organisation.

Corrections

Where a source is internally inconsistent, that is said on the page rather than resolved silently — the membership figure discussed in the district record is the clearest example. Dates and names have been transcribed as the record gives them, including its abbreviations and its variant spellings, and no attempt has been made to standardise or modernise them.
